This drew criticism from some, including Elizabeth Barcohana, a California Republican Party Delegate, who felt Obama’s remarks conveyed a sense of resentment during a national discourse on motherhood.
Jon Stewart, during the podcast, mentioned how parenting provided his life with structure and meaning. In response, Obama simply said, “I’m good,” indicating satisfaction with her current situation. Obama shared that she enjoys having control over her schedule without the demands of parenting.
Elizabeth Barcohana commented on the sentiment, pointing out that the emotion conveyed seemed more like resentment than mere exhaustion from motherhood. According to Barcohana, this feeling is uncomfortable to hear during current discussions about motherhood such as the Lindsay Clancy trial.
In contrast, Obama highlighted that despite missing her daughters at home, she looks forward to regular dinner plans with them. Furthermore, she detailed how differently she and her husband, Barack Obama, felt when their daughters left for college. Barack was visibly emotional, whereas Michelle found a certain freedom in the transition.
Conservative voices, like commentator Matt Walsh, criticized Obama for appearing eager for her children to leave home, despite receiving significant help from their family’s resources. He described it as a form of narcissism due to the relief she felt.
Link Lauren, a political commentator, also critiqued Obama, portraying her as someone who frequently complains about her affluent lifestyle and family dynamics. He framed the podcast as a platform for such grievances.
Obama explained more about her stance, expressing joy in her daughters’ independence and acknowledging the extensive time spent on parenting. She emphasized satisfaction with her personal schedule and reiterated her deep familiarity with her children due to the time spent raising them.
