This coincides with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. President Elizabeth Hillman emphasizes the importance of educating the over 100 million Americans born post-9/11 about the historical significance and national response to the attacks.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) recently stirred controversy following a change in internal policy. This involved avoiding the description of the September 11 attacks as ‘terrorist attacks.’ Senior Director of Journalistic Standards and Public Trust, Basem Boshra, authored the memo that led to confusion and concern. It was addressed to CBC News staff, advising the events be referred to as hijackings that resulted in crashes and destruction.
Responding to the resulting public confusion, CBC issued a follow-up memo, titled ‘How and why CBC News will adjust its 9/11 language guidance.’ The memo addressed the reporting standards related to ‘terrorism’ and clarified the intent behind the language used, aiming to prevent misinterpretation while maintaining accurate reporting of historical events.
CBC’s directive stated clearly, ‘The confusion stems from the leak of an excerpt from our internal language guide, causing significant concern, anger, and hurt for many.’ The organization affirms that their coverage of the 9/11 attacks has been thorough, covering the attacks by al-Qaeda and the extensive ensuing investigative and prosecutorial process.
CBC News has pledged extensive coverage for the 25th anniversary of 9/11, intending to offer a respectful and thoughtful reflection on the tragedy’s monumental impact. Their reporting has focused on accurately capturing the devastating events, the hunt for perpetrators, and the profound loss and grief resulting from it.
The National 9/11 Memorial in New York City stands as a tribute to those lost, featuring tall structures and an illuminated memorial pool that serves as a solemn reminder.
Addressing journalistic principles, Boshra explained the practice of attribution in reporting on terrorism, stressing that September 11, 2001, will be acknowledged as terrorism without requiring direct attribution. This aims to eliminate any barriers to clarity for the public.
Separately, Lt. Col. Michael Schrama, a military judge, recently dismissed a 2007 confession by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. The alleged mastermind’s statements were deemed involuntary, complicating trial proceedings. Mohammed, along with three co-defendants, is now scheduled for trial in June 2028.
