While walking along a path in Austin, Texas, Jasper Steinmetz encountered a man carrying something both familiar and unexpected: an Indiana University athletic backpack. Having recently graduated from Indiana, Steinmetz felt compelled to talk to him. This shared connection led to a remarkable story.
The man he met was Sampson James, originally from Indiana and homeless for eight months. Steinmetz discovered through a Google search that James had once been a promising athlete. As a four-star football recruit out of Avon High School, he joined Indiana University’s football team in 2019 as a freshman running back, later transferring to Purdue in 2021 before returning to Indiana University in 2023 as a walk-on.
James’ football dreams took a hit due to a severe knee injury, compounded by a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. He dropped out of university in 2023 without earning a degree and lost almost everything, except for his red school backpack.
This fellow Hoosier connection spurred Steinmetz to take action. Recognizing James’ struggles, he started an online fundraiser in June, raising $17,000 to help James get back on his feet.
“We just prepaid a bunch of rent and got him everything that he needed for the apartment,” Steinmetz explained regarding the new home they secured. It was a fresh start for James.
Each time James and Steinmetz revisit the path where they first met, the future looks brighter. The support and donations represent a community eager to see James succeed.
“Now that all these people donated and you got the apartment, they really want to see you succeed,” Steinmetz reminded James. To which James replied, “Oh yeah, and I’m big on not letting them down.”
This story underscores the powerful connections that can transform lives, arising from shared experiences and understanding. Steinmetz’s initiative exemplifies the significant impact of recognizing and acting upon those connections.
