The Chicago Cubs roster is facing a critical evaluation period, especially following the reappearance of utility player Matt Shaw on Friday morning. Intense focus is on the bullpen with the potential return of left-hander Hoby Milner and starter-turned-reliever Edward Cabrera.
As September starts, the Cubs have the opportunity to add two players, including one pitcher, to their roster. The recent 10-8 defeat against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field emphasizes the importance of effective relief as the regular season concludes.
Critical Analysis of Bullpen Performances
Manager Craig Counsell, pitching coach Tommy Hottovy, and other Cubs leaders are carefully evaluating the bullpen to identify the optimal mix for October playoffs. Friday’s game serves as a crucial data point in their decision-making process.
The Cubs bullpen surrendered eight runs during the game, with each of the three relievers allowing at least one. Trent Thornton, who experienced a typically consistent performance prior to this, allowed five runs in the sixth inning, making a significant impact on the loss. His ERA was 2.32 prior to Friday, having permitted only four runs since June 24.
According to Counsell, Thornton’s recent pitches were subpar, leading to hits by the opposing team. Thornton’s previous success illustrates the precariousness faced by the Cubs bullpen right now.
Roster Decisions and Player Involvement
The current bullpen setup of eight players includes three with minor-league options: right-hander Ryan Zeferjahn, left-hander Ryan Rolison, and right-hander Daniel Palencia. These players are pivotal under Counsell’s strategy. However, integrating Milner back into the team may require releasing one of the five current bullpen members: Thornton, closer Jacob Webb, left-hander Caleb Thielbar, or long relievers Aaron Civale and Colin Rea. Milner, after recovering from an appendectomy, is pressing close to his 30-day rehab limit and might be activated soon.
Any discussions surrounding Milner’s status resulted in conflicting reports about a designation for assignment. Counsell confirmed the inaccuracy of these reports while declining further commentary.
As the season concludes, an updated bullpen configuration is anticipated. Cabrera undertook a live session at the team’s Arizona facility and, upon recovery, may return from injury reserve onto the bullpen roster.
“We’re going to do some shorter stints with him, yes,” Counsell mentioned regarding Cabrera’s future contribution.
The Cubs currently operate with two long relievers, Civale and Rea. Civale recently gave up unearned runs and Rea’s recent activity has been minimal, despite remaining healthy for selection.
Boost from the Return of Matt Shaw
Shaw’s return to playing status positively impacted the Cubs offense, with outfielder Kevin Alcántara making space for his activation. Shaw dealt with a prolonged hand sprain absence beginning June 29 but is now healthy.
“It was one of those things where I assumed it was going to be quicker. It ended up taking a really long time,”
Shaw expressed his relief at overcoming recovery delays.
Shaw provides Counsell with another versatile option across the Cubs lineup. His recent pinch-hitting performance nearly contributed to a successful rally, scoring after a double during a crucial inning.
Despite scoring eight runs, Counsell acknowledged the difficulty in securing victories when allowing high runs against their team.
