Division matchups in the coming weeks will be crucial for determining the leader in the American League Central. Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable emphasized the significance of these games by stating, They’re very important, they’re going to decide it all. It’s about taking care of your own division.
On Friday, the first-place White Sox began a three-game series against the third-place Minnesota Twins at Target Field. The White Sox started the day with a lead of 2½ games over the Cleveland Guardians, who are in second place. Meanwhile, the Twins trailed by 6½ games.
White Sox pitcher Davis Martin highlighted the veterans’ role in guiding the younger players during the playoff push. He shared, The veterans emphasize taking care of each day, enjoying ourselves, and aiming to win one game at a time.
White Sox Performance
As of Friday, the White Sox had a 4-3 advantage over the Twins in their season series, with a score of 45-25 in favor of Chicago. In a series from May 25-28 at Rate Field, the White Sox secured three wins out of four games against the Twins. They suffered their single loss in extra innings with a score of 5-3 on May 26. However, they bounced back with a dominant 15-2 victory, featuring a grand slam by Chase Meidroth.
Meidroth has been impressive in his first seven games against the Twins, hitting .345 with two doubles, a home run, and seven RBIs. In games from June 1-3 at Target Field, the Sox lost two out of three against Minnesota but clinched the final match 8-0, thanks to Erick Fedde’s performance.
The Sox face the Twins five more times, with two games during the current weekend and a three-game series from September 4-6 at Rate Field. They also have three remaining games against the Guardians from September 14-16 at Progressive Field.
The White Sox hold a 6-4 lead in their series with the Guardians, with eight games decided by narrow margins. The series against the Guardians marks the beginning of ten consecutive games against divisional opponents.
Following series against the Guardians, the White Sox host the Detroit Tigers from September 17-20, then play in Kansas City from September 22-24. They have a 6-3 record against the Tigers and recently completed a three-game sweep against them at Comerica Park.
The Royals, although last in the AL Central, have won 10 of their last 11 games. Nevertheless, the White Sox are 7-3 against the Royals. Overall, the Sox boast a 23-13 record against divisional teams, a factor in their improvement from last season’s 18-34 record.
Including Friday’s game, 16 of their remaining 29 games are against AL Central teams. Venable acknowledged the competitive nature of all divisional teams and stressed the need to remain focused on winning each game.
Guardians Performance
The Guardians entered Friday riding a seven-game winning streak. They resumed division play with a series against the Royals, holding a 19-17 record against divisional opponents. Against the Royals, they are 4-3.
The Guardians conclude the regular season series with the Royals from September 25-27 at Kauffman Stadium. Additionally, they will face the Tigers in a series from September 4-6 at Progressive Field, starting with a doubleheader.
Although they have won seven out of nine games in this season’s series against the Tigers, the Guardians lost two of three in their most recent encounter at Comerica Park. They are also scheduled to visit Minnesota from September 11-13 before a crucial three-game series against the White Sox at Progressive Field.
Twins Performance
The Twins will engage in several crucial division matchups over the upcoming weeks. Following the White Sox series, they host the Tigers from August 31 to September 2, then travel for series against the White Sox and Tigers from September 7-9. Their final divisional games occur from September 11-13 against the Guardians at Target Field.
Despite being outscored 47-41 by the Guardians, the Twins lead the series 6-4. Similar trends appear in their series against the Tigers, where they’ve been outscored 37-32 but still hold a 5-2 advantage.
The Twins maintain a 19-18 record against the AL Central, while the Tigers, needing significant improvement, have struggled to a 13-25 record within the division. They have 14 remaining divisional games split among the Twins (six), Guardians (four), and White Sox (four).
Roster Moves
Before Friday’s game against the Twins, the White Sox made roster changes. Andrew Benintendi returned from the bereavement/family medical emergency list, Tyler Schweitzer was placed on paternity leave, and Tyler Gilbert was called up from Triple-A Charlotte.
