Controversial Umpire Calls and ABS Challenges Highlight Reds vs. Cubs Game

The Cincinnati Reds enjoyed a victory against the Chicago Cubs, winning 10-8 in a tense matchup. The Cubs had little to cheer about, particularly due to their bullpen’s difficulty containing the Reds’ offensive push in the later innings.

Much discussion followed about home plate umpire Bill Miller, who experienced a challenging game due to the automated ball-strike (ABS) system. Miller faced eight ABS challenges, and each one was overturned. The Cubs succeeded in five challenges, while the Reds captured the other three.

Baseball’s Evolution with ABS Challenges

The first overturned call occurred early when Miller called Reds pitcher Rhett Lowder’s fastball a ball. A swift ABS challenge overturned this, showing the pitch was within the strike zone.

Miller’s night deteriorated after this initial error. Seven additional calls faced challenges, with only two disputed pitches initially called strikes. Chicago catcher Carson Kelly challenged four calls, Reds’ José Trevino challenged two, while Cincinnati’s Sal Stewart and Chicago’s Seiya Suzuki each won one challenge.

Statistically Significant Calls

Interestingly, Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson abstained from challenging calls, though he leads the league with 88 successful overturns out of 124 attempts this season.

Miller has been involved in other ABS disputes as the crew chief during Reds games. In one such incident, Reds player Edwin Arroyo collided with Miller while handling a ground ball, contributing to a prolonged inning for the Reds defense.

After a controversial moment caught by television, Reds reliever Caleb Ferguson expressed frustration, later apologizing. Ferguson acknowledged, “It’s just a very unprofessional thing on my part.”

Data from TapToChallenge.com, a site monitoring ABS accuracy, noted Miller’s 0-for-8 performance in Chicago as the worst recorded since the system’s introduction in 2026.

Among MLB umpires, Miller’s 70 overturned calls place him ninth. Hunter Wendelstedt, Dan Iassogna, Malachi Moore, Lance Barrett, and Manny Gonzalez top the list.
