Mount Carmel senior Nathan Samuels felt embarrassed during a nationally televised game, and his response was decisive. The team had already conceded two touchdowns on special teams and a safety. With the host team trailing, Samuels executed a fake punt that altered the course of the game.
“The sideline was down, and the whole country was watching us,” Samuels said. “After my run, the momentum shifted. We began to capitalize on it.”
Samuels’ impactful 47-yard run came during a fake punt, helping Mount Carmel overturn a 30-0 deficit for a dramatic 48-44 victory against St. Joseph Regional from New Jersey. Senior quarterback Brady Cloherty threw seven touchdown passes, completing 26 of 41 passes for 309 yards. His first touchdown followed immediately after the fake punt, as he connected with junior Marshaun Thornton for a 27-yard score.
“Nathan’s 47-yard run was crucial,” Cloherty said. “He’s a versatile player who excels in every aspect. He catches and runs with equal skill.”
Quentin Burrell, bound for Michigan, secured a 35-yard touchdown catch for the winning score with 5:03 remaining. Samuels contributed with 102 yards on 12 carries and 45 yards on two receptions, igniting the comeback after Mount Carmel was halted on a fourth-and-short early in the game.
Coach Jordan Lynch praised the team’s aggressive strategy. “We’ve always taken risks on fourth downs,” Lynch said. “Nate’s agility and determination were pivotal. He’s a key player.”
Samuels, destined for Lindenwood, had a crucial 29-yard run in the fourth quarter, adding to his 719 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns last season. “I’m versatile,” Samuels said. “The fake punt gave me a chance to prove my abilities.” He attributes his dedication to his grandfather, who introduced him to football at age five. “He encouraged my passion,” Samuels recalled. “His influence was vital.” His grandfather likely wouldn’t have guessed that a hesitant child would become a formidable football player.
Samuels’ family has a rich sports background. His father excelled in four sports during high school, while his uncle played as a running back at Eastern Illinois. Samuels himself displays impressive speed in track, noting significant growth since his freshman year. “Everything clicked then,” he said. “I’ve progressed since a standout performance against Brother Rice.”
Samuels’ brother, Ethan, plays basketball at a notable junior college. Their competitive dynamic has been influential. “Those battles with my brother were crucial,” Samuels noted. “They helped me grow and pushed me out of my comfort zone.”
This memorable night stands out among Samuels’ high school achievements, despite not scoring directly. “We have celebrated state titles, but this is among my top experiences,” he said. “Supporting my team in every way was fulfilling.”
