Texas Senate Race: Talarico’s Two-Front Battle

Representative James Talarico, a Democratic Senate candidate in Texas, is engaged in a challenging race. Talarico is competing against Republican Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general. However, he faces difficulties within his own party. Jasmine Crockett, the congresswoman whom Talarico defeated in the Democratic primary, has declined to support him on the campaign trail.

Crockett’s Position

Crockett informed CNN that she plans to focus on downballot campaigning rather than joining Talarico. She noted a strategy of prioritizing multiple candidates instead of placing emphasis on one leading candidate, referencing the 2018 Senate run by Beto O’Rourke as a lesson. Crockett believes that spreading attention to other candidates may better motivate voters to participate in elections despite less enthusiasm for the top race.

She has mentioned that excitement for Talarico among Black voters appears low, but practical motivations may still drive them to vote. Crockett emphasized that Black voters remain committed to voting Democrat regardless of personal feelings toward Talarico. A TSU poll supports this view, showing 79% of likely Black voters plan to support Talarico, while only 12% back Paxton.

Talarico’s Response

James Talarico praised Crockett’s efforts within the Democratic party. In July, he acknowledged her endorsement and her focus on downballot candidates. At a Houston town hall, Talarico discouraged his supporters from criticizing Crockett, stressing the importance of party unity. Previously, in February, he defended his comments about fellow Democrats, ensuring the focus remained on campaign methods, not racial issues.

The November Election

Texas remains a critical state in the upcoming midterms. Talarico has shown leads in various polls, most notably a 6-point lead over Paxton, according to a TPOR survey. The state has not elected a Democrat since 1994, making Talarico’s position significant for Democrats aiming to shift the Senate majority. Political reports have varied in their predictions, with projections ranging from a “tossup” to “leans Republican.”

The election will test whether Democrats can capitalize on Talarico’s polling lead and address the need for broader party support. Observers continue to watch how Talarico navigates his internal and external challenges as election day approaches.
