Mica Miller’s family has accused her estranged husband, John-Paul “JP” Miller, a South Carolina pastor, of having her involuntarily admitted to a mental health facility. These allegations are part of a new documentary series on Netflix titled “Death of the Pastor’s Wife.” The series examines Mica’s life, marriage, and her April 2024 death, which authorities ruled a suicide.
The series suggests a pattern of coercive control during Mica’s marriage. According to her siblings, Mica was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during her engagement to Miller and was hospitalized several times, allegedly against her will. They claim Miller played an active role in managing her care.
Mica was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on April 27, 2024. The local medical examiner ruled her death a suicide.
Mica’s family alleges that during her hospitalization, Miller took her vehicle, phone, and laptop, which contained intimate photos of Mica. She reportedly informed the police about this incident.
Despite these serious accusations, Miller did not participate in the Netflix documentary. In December 2025, a federal grand jury indicted him on charges of cyberstalking and providing false statements to investigators. Allegations include posting a nude photograph of Mica without her consent and tracking her vehicle.
The federal indictment states that Miller’s actions put Mica in fear of death or serious injury. He pleaded not guilty to these charges and is currently out on a $100,000 bond.
Amid these developments, Mica’s family is advocating for “Mica’s Law,” a South Carolina legislative bill that seeks to include coercive control within state domestic-violence laws. The bill is currently stalled in the legislative process.
