Political Involvement
Piker shared with Semafor columnist David Weigel that El-Sayed initiated the request for him to campaign. “He asked me to stump for him,” Piker stated. “I’d never really delivered a speech like that before.” Prior efforts involving New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s campaign did not draw the same level of scrutiny.
After aligning with El-Sayed, Piker noted increased criticism from establishment Democrats. “I didn’t realize how much the media would think this is different,” Piker remarked. He added that his previous activities with El-Sayed, such as fundraising, had not caused a stir.
Response to Backlash
The backlash was partly due to Piker’s past controversial statements, including remarks on America and 9/11. El-Sayed has since distanced himself from Piker, describing him as “a streamer from California” irrelevant to the race.
El-Sayed has focused on essential political issues, stating, “I am not interested in a conversation about a social media person in California.” He emphasized the importance of addressing real political matters.
Apologies and Clarifications
El-Sayed has apologized for comments in response to an attack on a Michigan synagogue. “To anybody who feels like my comments may have been hurtful, I’m really sorry,” he told Fox News Digital. He clarified that while he intended to offer context, it was not the appropriate moment.
