Women in Arkansas face significant challenges when it comes to accessing prenatal care. In many areas, such as maternity care deserts, routine appointments require driving long distances. This issue impacts a substantial portion of the population.
For six years in a row, Arkansas has been recognized as the most pro-life state by Americans United for Life. However, recent data from the March of Dimes raises concerns. The report highlights that 33 out of 75 counties in Arkansas, which accounts for 44 percent, fall into the category of maternity care deserts.
These counties lack essential healthcare facilities, including hospitals and birth centers with obstetric care. They also do not have obstetric clinicians available to provide necessary services. As a result, women in these areas must travel significant distances, often over an hour, to receive basic prenatal care.
The situation in Arkansas emphasizes the disparity between the state’s pro-life stance and the reality of maternal healthcare accessibility. It underscores the need for improved healthcare infrastructure to support women and children effectively.
