The Dallas Cowboys were on the lookout for a seasoned defensive end early in the offseason, expressing interest in Maxx Crosby. With the trade of Micah Parsons last year, they required reinforcement on the edge. Finally, Dallas secured Von Miller with a one-year contract valued at up to $7.5 million.
According to Todd Archer of ESPN, the signing of Von Miller prompted the release of Sam Williams. This veteran edge rusher had initially inked a one-year deal with $2 million guaranteed in March. Archer’s report on X indicated that Miller’s addition reduced available rusher positions on the 53-man roster.
Williams, a second-round pick by Dallas in 2022, made notable contributions during his tenure with the team. He achieved 85 tackles, three forced fumbles, 22 tackles for loss, and 9.5 sacks. In the 2025 season, he appeared in 17 games and started five.
Facing the challenge of securing a spot on the roster during training camp, Williams acknowledged the pressure. He emphasized his determination to improve by confronting his shortcomings.
“I took all the reports, all the negative comments, everything,” Williams remarked via KLTV.com. “I looked at myself in the mirror because you can’t get better unless you know what you’re doing wrong. So I tried to fix everything I’ve seen, even writing it on my mirror.”
Williams expressed that he focused solely on hard work, refusing to place blame elsewhere.
His performance peaked in 2023 with 26 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Unfortunately, he missed the 2024 season due to a torn ACL and MCL during training camp.
The decision to release Williams coincided with the Cowboys’ efforts to enhance their team dynamics. As the regular season approaches, it remains uncertain if any teams will express interest in acquiring Williams.
