Hurricane Karina Intensifies

Hurricane Karina has developed into a Category 4 storm in the eastern Pacific. It is generating swells expected to affect Southern California, posing potential life-threatening surf and rip currents. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) advises these swells will impact southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula before heading north to Southern California from Monday through midweek.

Storm Movement and Current Position

Although Hurricane Karina itself is not predicted to move toward California, the swells it generates can travel vast distances. As of late Sunday, Karina was positioned about 1,020 miles (1,640 kilometers) west-southwest of Baja California’s southern tip. The hurricane’s sustained winds reached 145 mph as it moved west at 9 mph.

Tropical Tidbits, a meteorological site, provides spaghetti-model guidance indicating Karina’s westward path, staying offshore from Mexico and California. These maps show Karina remaining over the Pacific, where it will persist from Monday to midweek.

The NHC’s forecast predicts the arrival of swells creating hazardous surf and rip currents. Although the hurricane will maintain a distance, its swells threaten beach safety. Karina’s current location was at 17.2 degrees north latitude and 124.4 degrees west longitude on Monday morning. It had maximum sustained winds of 125 knots and gusts up to 150 knots, with further strengthening possible.
