Ulysses Morales from Oak Forest has found himself in an unexpected position in football, despite his longstanding passion for soccer. As a senior midfielder, Morales began kicking for the Bengals during his sophomore year and committed to Illinois football in June. Although he contemplated quitting soccer, he decided the demanding schedule was worthwhile.
“The football coaches encouraged me to keep playing,” Morales explained. “My soccer coaches supported my decision, whatever I chose.” He values this last year to enjoy soccer with friends, even though his future leans toward football.
His weekends are hectic. Morales contributed to Oak Forest football’s 38-0 victory over Stagg on Friday night, followed by aiding a 1-0 soccer win against Mount Carmel on Saturday. “I’ve juggled both sports since sophomore year, but this year my focus on football has intensified. It’s been the toughest,” shared Morales.
He admits his legs are still adapting, requiring increased visits to the trainer before and after games. Despite the extra recovery efforts, Morales views them as necessary.
Morales’ path to football has been unpredictable. His football journey began when he tried kicking as a sophomore, initially skeptical about its potential. “After my sophomore year, I questioned whether to continue,” he recalled. Fortunately, his kicking coach, Chris Nendick, played a crucial role in encouraging him and refining his skills.
Last season, Morales made five field goals for Oak Forest, earning recognition during college camps. “Purdue showed interest first,” said Morales. Later, in March, he received an offer from Arkansas State, followed by a commitment to Illinois in June.
Morales attributes his success more to mental growth than physical ability. “I used to doubt myself sophomore year,” Morales admitted. Now, he embraces the challenge of game-winning opportunities, gaining both self-trust and trust from his team.
On the soccer field, Morales commands similar trust, according to Oak Forest’s coach, Alex Alvarez. “Football might be his main focus for the future, but soccer is still dear to him,” Alvarez stated. The team accommodates Morales’ dual commitments, valuing his presence and leadership even without a captain’s title.
