A federal judge has mandated force-feeding for Rahmanullah Lakanwal, accused of a fatal shooting involving National Guard members in Washington, D.C. last year. The decision came after Lakanwal refused food and water for several months while in custody.
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta issued the order on Saturday, stating the necessity to ‘preserve’ Lakanwal’s life and prevent further deterioration in his health, potentially leading to death. The directive will continue until Lakanwal resumes adequate intake of food and liquid and accepts necessary medical treatment.
Lakanwal was transferred to a D.C. hospital in emergency circumstances on July 9 for medical care required to sustain his life. The nutrition and medical intervention will stay in effect until October 28, according to court documents.
Lakanwal, an Afghan national in the U.S. on humanitarian parole since 2021, faces serious charges. These include the murder of Army SPC Sarah Beckstrom and the critical wounding of Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe during an attack close to the White House last November. Furthermore, he attempted to kill two additional service members at the scene.
The incident involved Beckstrom and Wolfe, who served as part of an anti-crime operation with the West Virginia National Guard in D.C. The reasons behind Lakanwal’s refusal of food and medical care remain unclear as his legal representatives have not commented.
Lakanwal faces a series of federal charges, such as the murder of a person assisting a U.S. officer and gun-related crimes leading to death. These could result in the death penalty. He also contends with attempted murder, firearm offenses, and additional charges under D.C. laws. Lakanwal pleaded not guilty to all accusations.
The Justice Department is considering pursuing the death penalty concerning Lakanwal’s case. His trial continues under intense scrutiny due to the gravity of the offenses involved.
