The family of Zytina Mason-Brown, a 14-year-old girl from Washington, D.C., expressed relief following the arrest of a suspect involved in her death. Initially, police believed the incident to be an accidental shooting, but the family insisted it was not self-inflicted.
Authorities detained a 17-year-old male suspect linked to the killing of Mason-Brown, who was fatally shot inside an apartment. The police allege the suspect was present at the time of the incident. Mason-Brown’s grandmother, Michelle Brown, stated, ‘I wish we didn’t have to go through this, but I’m feeling satisfied that D.C. police did apprehend the suspect.’
Mason-Brown, an eighth grader with ambitions of becoming a beautician and real estate agent, was killed on May 21, 2025. The tragedy occurred at the Benning Courts Pentacle complex, situated across from Hechinger Mall. Initially, the authorities described the shooting as accidental, suggesting Mason-Brown had shot herself while making a video for social media.
The family’s doubts and persistence raised questions about the official account. In August 2025, the D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death as a homicide. Her aunt, Dawna Cooke, commented, ‘We knew that Zytina did not kill herself. I really want to thank the Metropolitan Police Department for their efforts.’
The suspect’s identity and court appearances remain undisclosed due to juvenile privacy laws.
