The jury in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial informed Judge William Sullivan on Tuesday that they could not reach a unanimous decision after four days of deliberation. The judge urged the jury to return to further discussions. ‘I know this was a lengthy trial,’ he said, reminding them of the extensive witness testimony and evidence presented. ‘Please, keep all instructions in mind and continue your deliberations.’
Earlier that day, Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, expressed his willingness to proceed with another trial if necessary. ‘If the verdict ends in a hung jury, we’ll absolutely try again,’ Reddington stated. He showed confidence in the jury, acknowledging their attentiveness during the five-week trial. Responding to a question about a hung jury’s implications, Reddington said, ‘Try it again.’
The jury, composed of nine women and three men, began their discussions on Thursday afternoon. On Friday, they requested a review of specific evidence, including pill bottles and a knife. The jury is deliberating whether to convict Clancy of first-degree murder for the deaths of her children, Cora (5), Dawson (3), and Callan (8 months), who were found strangled with exercise bands in January 2023 in the basement of their Duxbury home. Her husband discovered Clancy outside after she attempted suicide, resulting in paralysis from the waist down.
Clancy’s defense claims she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and had previously sought mental health treatment. Conversely, prosecutors argue that she premeditated the murders. The jury has multiple options: convicting Clancy of first-degree murder or lesser charges like second-degree murder or manslaughter. They may also find her not guilty or not criminally responsible, if they believe she lacked control over her actions due to psychosis.
