A husband accused of rape and sexual abuse will face trial in England on Tuesday, along with twelve other men also alleged to be involved in or facilitate the abuse. The man, who is in his 60s and hails from Stockport in the northwest of England, is accused of conspiring to drug and rape his unconscious wife. This trial will take place in Manchester.
Under U.K. law, the man’s identity cannot be revealed to protect his wife’s anonymity, who is the alleged victim. He faces 48 charges, as reported by CBS News’ partner BBC News. The charges include five counts of rape, three sexual assaults, six assaults by penetration, and one count of sharing intimate photos or videos, according to Greater Manchester police.
Though he initially denied all charges, he pled guilty to 15 charges. These include several counts of rape and assault. However, he still denies 11 counts of rape and numerous other charges including conspiracy to rape and administer substances with intent, stated the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service.
The other men on trial, aged between 28 and 73, are accused of various crimes. These range from sexual abuse to providing substances to render the victim unconscious, facilitating the abuse. Prosecutors shared the details with CBS News on Tuesday.
This case echoes that of Gisèle Pelicot, who testified publicly in a mass rape trial in 2024 against her ex-husband and several other men. Pelicot, a French woman, waived her right to anonymity to make court proceedings public. Her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, and 51 men were found guilty after a four-month trial, leading to Dominique receiving the maximum sentence of 20 years.
The ongoing trial in England continues to attract significant public attention, drawing uncomfortable parallels with the Pelicot case.
