Warning on Scam Targeting Families of Kane County Jail Inmates

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has issued a warning regarding a scam aimed at families of individuals held in the Kane County jail. Scammers are reportedly contacting the family members, requesting a $2,000 retainer fee for the inmate’s release.

Officials have clarified that neither the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office nor the Kane County Sheriff’s Office will ever request direct payments. Additionally, it’s important to note that Illinois does not have a cash bail system.

The State’s Attorney’s Office highlighted that knowing an inmate’s name or personal details does not validate the authenticity of these calls. Information about those held in the county jail is publicly accessible.

Individuals receiving suspicious calls are advised to disconnect immediately and verify the request by contacting the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office directly at 630-232-3500.
