Trump’s Return Sparks Immigration Crackdown

Donald Trump returned to the presidency with a promise to heavily restrict both legal and unauthorized immigration in the United States. This decision marks a significant shift in immigration policy under the new administration.

In January 2026, the Trump administration indefinitely halted visa processing for citizens from 75 countries. The State Department, through spokesperson Tommy Pigott, cited the likelihood of visa applicants becoming a “public charge” as the reason for this freeze. This term refers to individuals dependent on public benefits to meet their basic needs.

However, in August, a federal court overturned the visa freeze, ruling against the administration’s policy. That same month, the administration temporarily halted the processing of immigrant visa appointments globally to focus on consular officer training. This pause is anticipated to end by early to mid-September.
