House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark has triumphed over two progressive challengers in Massachusetts’ 5th Congressional District. The primary race focused on issues like Gaza and pro-Israel political contributions. Clark, who originally gained her position through a special election in 2013, faced Jonathan Paz and Tarik Samman in this contest.
As the second-highest-ranking Democrat after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Clark plays a key role in opposing Republican efforts in areas such as spending, immigration, and health care. Her stance on ICE funding and cuts to Head Start and Medicaid has been particularly vocal.
Clark’s campaign raised $4.5 million, significantly outpacing her opponents. Paz secured $88,500, and Samman, a 27-year-old Harvard Law School researcher, raised $43,800.
Within the Democratic Party dynamics, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Clark have jointly stood against Republican budget proposals. Though backed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Clark has questioned Israel’s actions in Gaza. Previously, she referred to the situation there using strong language, but clarified her position later.
Clark consistently supports Israel’s sovereignty and the provision of certain U.S. defense systems, although she maintains a critical outlook on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies. Her stance does not align fully with those of her challengers, who argue she should reject AIPAC’s financial support.
In general elections, Clark has maintained a strong hold on her district, defeating Republican Caroline Colarusso in 2022 with a commanding lead of 74% to 26%.
