Sen. Ed Markey Secures Democratic Nomination Amid Generational Debate

Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts has won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, overcoming a challenge from Rep. Seth Moulton. This victory, confirmed by The Associated Press, further signals a win for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party in this election cycle.

Markey’s victory contrasts with the push for generational change within the party. Recent primaries have featured contests between younger, progressive Democrats and older incumbents. Despite his age, Markey, who turned 80 in July, has successfully countered this trend by affirming his long-standing commitment to progressive values.

First elected to Congress in 1976, Markey portrays himself as a son of a milkman from Malden. He advocates for ‘Medicare for All,’ opposes increases in defense budgets under President Trump, and supports higher taxes on the wealthy. Markey emphasizes the importance of focusing on candidates’ ideas rather than age.

This is the most energized I’ve ever been, fighting Donald Trump every single day, fighting his agenda to undermine families all across our country, Markey stated during a July debate.

Polls leading up to the nomination showed Markey with an advantage, as supporters connected with his progressivism and were less concerned about his age. He received endorsements from prominent figures like Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

In an August debate, Markey criticized Moulton for not adequately supporting transgender rights, a point of contention during the campaign. Moulton had made controversial remarks in 2024 about sports and gender identity. During the debate, Moulton apologized for any hurt caused by his comments and reinforced his commitment to LGBTQ rights.

This marks the second successful primary challenge for Markey against younger opponents, as he previously defeated Rep. Joe Kennedy III in 2020. Markey will now compete against attorney John Deaton for the Senate seat in November, with high expectations of winning in the predominantly Democratic state of Massachusetts.
