The NBA completed its investigation into Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers after a year-long inquiry into potential salary cap breaches. The findings revealed that the Clippers improperly provided off-court endorsement and income opportunities to Leonard through partnerships with companies such as Aspiration, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance. The team aimed to secure Leonard’s services through these arrangements.
As a consequence, the NBA imposed a $30 million fine on the Clippers. Additionally, the team must forfeit five consecutive first-round draft picks from 2029 to 2033. Steve Ballmer, the team’s owner, faces a one-year suspension from all team and league activities. Kawhi Leonard received a $700,000 fine for breaking league rules, but his contract remains intact, and he did not face suspension.
A lingering question pertained to the trade between the Clippers and the Raptors. On Wednesday’s SportsCenter, ESPN’s Shams Charania clarified the situation, stating, “There’s full expectation that this trade will be going down as is between the Clippers and the Raptors that had multiple first-round picks, other swaps, and second-round pick considerations going to the Clippers. The trade is on track, and both sides can now move forward with getting this deal done.” Charania also remarked on Leonard’s acknowledgment of his error in judgment, while the players’ union views the situation as a player being exploited by a business representative, Leonard’s uncle.
The conclusion of the investigation allowed Toronto Raptors fans to anticipate Leonard’s potential return. When rumors emerged about Leonard potentially choosing to return to Toronto, where he helped secure the 2019 NBA title, excitement surged among fans. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had previously stated that no transactions could proceed until the inquiry ended, leaving some concerned about the trade’s fate.
With the investigation now complete, Leonard is expected to join a Raptors team featuring promising talents like Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, and Immanuel Quickley. The trade deal involves Leonard moving to the Raptors in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and second-round picks in 2030 and 2033.
Regarding Dennis Robertson, Leonard’s longtime business manager and uncle, the investigation led to a five-year ban on him conducting business with any NBA player, team, or league personnel.
