In a tense game against the Houston Astros, the Chicago White Sox were unable to capitalize on crucial scoring opportunities. The game remained scoreless into the eighth inning. The White Sox had Tristan Peters on third and Drew Romo on first with no outs. Sam Antonacci grounded to shortstop Jeremy Peña, leading to Peters being tagged out at home.
Manager Will Venable explained the strategic decision involving Peters, aiming to avoid a double play despite not advancing the remaining runners. Munetaka Murakami later hit a single, yet Romo hesitated and stopped at third base.
“Just a hard-hit ball to right field,” Romo noted, explaining his caution.
With bases loaded, Miguel Vargas grounded into an inning-ending double play. Chicago White Sox pitcher Davis Martin performed well in his return from injury, pitching 5 2/3 scoreless frames. He scattered five hits, struck out three, and walked one.
“Just try to take it one pitch at a time,” Martin remarked about his focused approach.
The Astros seized their opportunity in the bottom of the eighth. Nelson Velázquez hit a two-run single, ending the scoreless tie. The Astros won 2-0, with 24,025 attending at Daikin Park.
The White Sox maintained their three-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central, as the Guardians also lost that day. Despite the defeat, the White Sox received notable performances. Martin avoided trouble in the fourth, with a smart series of pitches to retire Astros batters after a first-and-third situation.
Earlier, the White Sox missed converting scoring chances against Astros starter Hayden Wesneski. He allowed only one hit over seven innings while White Sox manager Will Venable questioned an umpire’s decision on a dropped ball that ended in a double play.
“It was a funny play,” Venable said, regarding Altuve’s play at second base.
The eighth inning saw more missed opportunities for the White Sox, despite causing havoc for reliever AJ Blubaugh. An option to pinch-run for Romo was considered but ultimately trusted his capability to score.
The Astros then loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth. After a hit by pitch and a challenge that upheld the call, the Sox forced an out at home before Velázquez delivered his game-winning hit.
Astros’ closer Josh Hader sealed the win with a perfect ninth inning. Romo expressed disappointment in the missed chances.
“We had multiple opportunities to score and we didn’t come through,” Romo reflected on the game.
