Matt Campbell, beginning his first season as head coach at Penn State, is embracing the legacy of former coach Joe Paterno. This marks a departure from previous coaches, who maintained some distance following Paterno’s controversial departure.
Paterno was dismissed after the Jerry Sandusky scandal, and coaches Bill O’Brien and James Franklin were cautious about referencing him. However, Campbell is actively acknowledging Paterno’s impact and is connecting with his family. He has made several references to Paterno in public appearances and keeps a photo of him in his workplace.
The university is also highlighting Paterno’s contributions by opening an exhibit at Beaver Stadium. This display will feature items from Paterno’s tenure, including an office desk, emphasizing his extensive career with the Nittany Lions.
Even after Paterno’s removal, certain tributes remain, like the library that carries his name, although his statue was removed after the scandal.
Campbell expressed the importance of understanding Penn State’s history. He emphasized the significance of the figures who helped shape the program, striving to bring back its past glory.
Under Paterno, Penn State achieved great success, winning two national titles and three Big Ten championships. Paterno’s overall record was 409-136-3. Despite some promising seasons since his departure, Penn State has not consistently reached those heights.
By invoking Paterno’s legacy, Campbell hopes to inspire and lead the team to more consistent victories.
