Discovery of the Floating Island
A floating island was recently located after initially baffling observers with its disappearance from one of Canada’s largest reservoirs. BC Hydro announced that the island on British Columbia’s Williston Reservoir drifted approximately 30 kilometers, or about 19 miles, over 15 days before its location was confirmed along the shoreline of the reservoir’s Ospika Arm.
Tracking the Island’s Journey
The island was first noticed near Finlay Bay, and it captured international curiosity when it seemingly vanished from its original spot. BC Hydro confirmed its new position using satellite imagery, small aircraft observations, and reports from boaters. “We found the island,” BC Hydro stated in a social media update. “Turns out it wasn’t missing. Just drifting.”
Timeline of Events
On July 21, satellite images showed a tree-covered floating island west of Finlay Bay. By August 13, the island was absent from its initial location, leading to a series of reports and speculations about its movement. Satellite imagery from August 15 showed the island near the Ospika Arm, confirming its location on August 31, with an official announcement made on September 2.
Understanding a Floating Island
A floating island consists of vegetation, soil, and organic material floating on water. While small examples are common in various water bodies globally, larger islands supporting mature trees are rare. This natural structure likely formed over years as logs and woody debris accumulated, allowing vegetation to root and form a stable floating mass.
Research and Verification
The appearance of this island piqued the interest of geologists and ecologists seeking to comprehend how such vegetated islands form and drift. BC Hydro spokesperson Bob Gammer highlighted the need for verification of unusual reports in an age where technology can easily manipulate images and videos.
Island Dimensions and Safety Advisory
The island measures approximately 459 feet long and 230 feet wide, covering an area of about 9,800 square meters, similar in size to two NFL football fields. It is densely vegetated, including mature trees. Despite its appearance, BC Hydro advises against landing on the island due to its unstable composition of logs and decayed debris.

As BC Hydro continues to monitor the island, researchers aim to uncover more about this unique natural phenomenon. While questions about its origins and movement remain, the current focus is on its ecological significance and ensuring safety as it drifts through the reservoir.
