Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position as the general manager of the University of North Carolina (UNC) football program. This decision comes following over a month on paid administrative leave due to an internal investigation, as confirmed by a statement from UNC on Thursday.
The university’s internal investigation continues despite Lombardi’s departure. The probe will be led by the Office of University Counsel. UNC announced the investigation publicly in late July, though specific allegations remain undisclosed.
Lombardi took on the role of general manager in 2025, aligning with Bill Belichick’s first season as head coach. Known for his strong working relationship with the seven-time Super Bowl-winning coach, Lombardi was an influential figure in the program.
“Effective September 3, 2026, Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position as General Manager of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s football program,” UNC announced.
During his tenure, Lombardi became college football’s highest-paid football operations executive with an annual salary of $1.5 million. His involvement with the program began as one of Belichick’s initial hires.
The university remains discreet about the ongoing investigation, citing the confidentiality of personnel issues. However, UNC has pledged to consider appropriate actions based on the investigation’s findings.
Bill Belichick addressed Lombardi’s leave on July 30, stating, “We’re working through some things.” As preseason camp began, Belichick mentioned that adjustments were being made as needed within the program.
Despite the challenges, Belichick’s second season started positively with a victory over TCU. This win in Ireland contrasts with the previous season, which ended with a 4-8 record.
The situation continues to evolve as the investigation progresses.
