President Trump appointed Adam Telle as the acting Army secretary following Dan Driscoll’s resignation. Telle, formerly the assistant secretary of the Army for civil works, has substantial experience, including years working for Republican senators and serving as the president’s chief liaison to the Senate during Trump’s first term.
Trump praised Telle for his patriotism on Truth Social, and Pete Hegseth also shared his support, congratulating Telle for being intelligent and dedicated. Telle previously addressed Congress in his role as assistant secretary for civil works.
Telle is respected by all, according to President Trump.
Driscoll’s resignation followed tension with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Driscoll, an Army veteran and Vice President JD Vance’s ally, had planned to transform Army operations. He raised concerns with the Trump administration over key generals being removed from those plans. Gen. Randy George, Army Chief of Staff, resigned earlier this year, followed by Gen. Chris Donahue, indicating disruption within high military ranks.
The planned Army Transformation Initiative by George and Driscoll aimed to integrate drones and new technology but faced challenges. The initiative’s supporters were affected by leadership changes as well, including the new drone battalion experiencing phasing out plans.
Telle now manages the U.S. Army as it remains involved in conflict with Iran, maintaining significant forces in the Middle East. This has strained the availability of critical defense systems like the Patriot and THAAD interceptors. Driscoll’s departure drew bipartisan concern, with some attributing issues directly to Hegseth’s influence on leadership transitions.
Senator Thom Tillis expressed concern over a leadership void prompted by Hegseth’s actions, highlighting a need for stable military leadership.
