Caitlin Clark is preparing for her debut in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup on Friday. Her performance for the Indiana Fever last month suggests Team USA might be unbeatable. During August in the WNBA, Clark showcased extraordinary skills, setting new league records.
Clark scored or assisted on 44.7 points per game in August, achieving a WNBA record for a single month. She excels in scoring and creating opportunities for her teammates. The Indiana Fever, led by Clark, entered the FIBA World Cup break following a decisive victory over the Connecticut Sun.
Clark became the first player in WNBA history to have consecutive games with over 30 points and 10 assists. In the last two games before the break, she scored 34 points and 12 assists in a 111-91 win over the Connecticut Sun. Later, she scored 37 points and 10 assists in a 113-90 victory against the Chicago Sky, making eight of 12 three-pointers.
Even an on-court altercation during the game against the Sky did not unsettle Clark and the Fever as they secured the win. Additionally, controversies off the court, involving players like Enes Kanter Freedom, grabbed media attention.
The WNBA is addressing the increasing discussions about transgender athletes and online hostility toward players. A task force met to discuss these issues, but no new eligibility rules were formulated. The league emphasized ongoing discussions aligning with its values.
Despite these challenges, Clark’s achievements are undeniable. In August, she achieved five games with at least 20 points and 10 assists, a feat unparalleled in the last five seasons. Her average of 24.4 points per game marked the highest-scoring month by a point guard in WNBA history.
The Indiana Fever ended August with a 7-4 record, bringing their season total to 26-14. Currently ranking fifth, the standings are tight. With four regular-season games left, Clark and her teammates aim to enter the playoffs with momentum.
