The La Grange Village Board recently approved a Resolution of Appreciation for Trustee Glenn Thompson, who resigned after accepting a job offer in Florida. Thompson, formerly part of the village’s Environmental Quality Commission and a founding member of Dry Up La Grange, officially stepped down on July 31.
Thompson mentioned that his new job opportunity appeared unexpectedly. He shared, “It was something that was not planned. They made me an offer I could not refuse.” Attempting to commute between La Grange and Florida seemed too burdensome, so he chose to relocate.
Reflecting on his journey to becoming a trustee, Thompson recalled the aftermath of the 2021 flood. His wife noted the online discussions, acknowledging their minor basement flooding. A surprised Thompson witnessed a crowded board meeting during the COVID-19 pandemic, as affected residents expressed their anger, primarily toward Hansen Quarry regarding disputed drainage rights.
Thompson observed 1,000 families engaging online and at meetings within six weeks. The village took legal action against the quarry operators in 2023, successfully contesting the severing of vital pipelines. Thompson’s leadership in Dry Up La Grange facilitated meetings with Congressman Sean Castens’ staff and local officials, targeting flooding solutions.
La Grange village President Mark Kuchler proposed assigning flooding responsibilities to the Environmental Quality Commission, appointing Thompson to lead the initiative. Thompson recalled their achievements, “We got the overhead sewer back flow preventer program pushed through.” Encouraged by Kuchler, Thompson ran for the board, leveraging his community connections.
During his tenure, Thompson prided himself on advancing the 50th Street project toward construction. Coordinated efforts with Dry Up La Grange and local authorities aimed to secure funding, aided by the village’s legal victory.
Expressing regret at leaving his position, Thompson noted the challenge of stepping down. Though unaware of his successor, he mentioned providing suggestions to Kuchler. He emphasized the appointing responsibility lies solely with Kuchler, indicating the successor must run for election again in 2027.
