Health officials have raised alarms in several states due to rabies detections in bats, raccoons, foxes, goats, and a pet dog. This year, Idaho and Texas have seen significant increases.
Idaho’s Rabid Bat Increase
Idaho has reported 24 rabid bats, surpassing the previous three years’ counts. One district received twice the calls regarding bat exposure compared to last year. A confirmed rabid bat appeared in Blaine County on July 14, marking the first case for south-central Idaho this year.
While the cause of increased encounters is unknown, Idaho’s growing population and wildfire smoke affecting bat movement are potential factors. Bats can transmit the virus, but their appearance doesn’t reveal infection. Residents are advised against touching bats and should report any direct contact.
Texas Reports First Rabid Dog Case in a Decade
In San Antonio, 22 rabies cases in wild animals were reported in June and July, contrasting with only two to three cases in previous years. A pet Husky mix in San Antonio’s Far West Side tested positive after encountering a baby skunk, emphasizing the need for immediate reporting of animal encounters. Vaccination and supervision of pets are essential.
Alabama’s Rabid Fox Incident
Autauga County reported a rabid fox near the Billingsley junction, detected on August 18. After noticing the fox’s abnormal behavior, the property owner contacted health officials. The fox was euthanized, and rabies boosters were administered to two dogs that might have been exposed.
North Carolina’s Petting Zoo Exposure Alert
Health officials are investigating rabies exposure from infected baby goats linked to Farm Adventures, a mobile petting zoo. Though four goats were exposed, events occurred throughout multiple counties. Residents who contacted the goats in July-August should connect with health departments for advice.
Rabies Alert in Florida
A raccoon tested positive for rabies in Brevard County, initiating a 60-day alert effective September 3. Residents are urged to avoid wild animals and ensure pets are vaccinated.
Maryland’s Rabies Cases
Anne Arundel County faced multiple alerts after rabid raccoons and bats were discovered. Alerts advised residents to check if anyone touched infected animals.
Michigan’s Bat Rabies Cases
Rabid bats have been consistent, adding to 48 recorded this year, as reported on September 3.
California’s Yosemite Alert
Yosemite Park announced a dead brown bat found to be rabid, prompting a public health message for any encounters near Curry Village on May 18.
