Addressing Key Social Issues: A Call for Action Beyond Messaging

Jack Brewer, CEO of The Brewer Group, sheds light on the fatherlessness crisis affecting the United States. He highlights a significant issue where 72% of black children grow up without a father present. Brewer underlines the societal impacts, such as higher incarceration rates and behavioral issues among youth. He advocates for increased male mentorship and participation in youth sports to combat negative media influences.

In recent developments, the NFL plans to place ‘End Racism’ and ‘Stop Hate’ messages in the end zones for the 2026 season. The move includes allowing social justice statements on player helmets.

Brewer critiques these actions as mere virtue signaling, perceived as a reaction to the events of 2020. Instead of such gestures, he proposes alternative messages that could have real impact. Brewer recounts how the NFL first adopted the ‘End Racism’ slogan in 2020 after the death of George Floyd, aiming to address racism. However, these actions have been viewed by some, such as Barstool’s PFT Commentator, as lacking substance.

A suggestion from Brewer: Replace ‘End Racism’ with messages like ‘End Fatherlessness.’

Fatherlessness, according to Brewer, is an epidemic. Studies indicate that father absence leads to disadvantages in education, behavior, and long-term economic stability. For instance, 64% of African-American children lived apart from their fathers in 2012. Research reveals that paternal incarceration often results in increased behavioral and educational challenges for children. Communities with greater black father presence show higher employment rates and lower incarceration among adults.

A significant area of concern is abortion. Brewer points out its considerable impact on the black community, with Black women accounting for a large percentage of abortions in America. Statistics from 2020 to 2023 estimate over 4 million abortions. In 2022, Black women represented 39.5% of reported abortions, a percentage disproportionate to their population.

Brewer suggests the league could make a significant difference with active involvement in community outreach. The NFL can align resources and initiatives to address issues like fatherlessness and abortion.

Beyond these, Brewer calls attention to the problem of hunger—particularly in black communities. In 2023, about 22.4% of Black Americans faced food insecurity. Black children are at higher risk, with 27% living in food-insecure households.

The NFL, with its vast resources and influence, can support food-security efforts. They can partner with food banks, fund mobile pantries, and provide offseason meals for children. The Inspire Change program, having invested over $375 million into social-justice causes, provides a framework for these initiatives. Addressing hunger is an area where the NFL’s involvement can produce measurable outcomes.
