Homeowners With Low Interest Rates Still Choose to Pay Mortgages Faster

Many homeowners are accelerating their mortgage payments, even those with low interest rates. Financial planner Christopher Price notes that with a 2.5 percent mortgage, it often makes more financial sense to pay as slowly as possible. Yet, data from Rocket Mortgage indicates a different trend.

Almost 25% of homeowners are choosing to pay off their mortgages faster than required. Intriguingly, those who could benefit most from this approach are not the ones doing it. This is based on an analysis of early payments on nearly 3 million loans from Rocket Mortgage, conducted over the past five years across all 50 states.

Some homeowners may have personal reasons for early payments, such as desiring financial freedom or lack of alternative investment options. However, financial experts often recommend considering whether faster payments align with broader financial goals before proceeding.
