U.S. Forces Target Drug Smuggling Refueling Vessels Near Ecuador

On Saturday, U.S. forces operating near Ecuador intercepted and destroyed several commercial vessels suspected to be used for refueling boats smuggling drugs to the United States. This action was part of the U.S. Southern Command’s ongoing efforts to disrupt smuggling operations in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Interception Details

This operation marked the fourth time vessels used as floating refueling platforms were intercepted in the eastern Pacific. According to a U.S. official, this mission resulted in no casualties on either side. The initiative is part of a broader campaign that began over a year ago to hinder narcotics traffickers.

Mission Execution

The U.S. Southern Command, which oversees military actions in Central and South America, released a video on social media. The footage shows a U.S. military vessel, specifically an 11-meter rigid-hull inflatable boat, approaching a larger civilian craft with fuel jugs visible on its deck. A Marine Corps helicopter positioned itself off the vessel’s starboard side. Following the boat’s departure from the frame, the larger vessel’s bow is seen exploding.

Individuals aboard the refueling vessel were handed over to Ecuadorean government officials, who were present during the mission. The operation was further supported by sailors and Marines aboard the U.S.S. San Antonio. They launched helicopters that fired munitions at other vessels, subsequently sinking them, as reported by the official.

Background and Consequences

The refueling setup was reportedly operated by Los Choneros, a group the State Department labeled a “foreign terrorist organization” shortly after the campaign against suspected smuggling vessels commenced on September 2, 2025. Since then, the U.S. military has conducted 68 attacks on alleged drug smuggling vessels in the area, resulting in the deaths of 227 individuals, according to a New York Times analysis.

The U.S. Southern Command is based in South Florida and continues to play a pivotal role in strategizing and executing operations against drug smuggling activities in the region.
