Five students from Lincoln-Way East High School were removed from a varsity football game on Friday night. They allegedly engaged in racist harassment and exhibited offensive behavior towards Homewood-Flossmoor (HF) fans.
HF District 233 Superintendent Jennifer Norrell and Principal Clinton Alexander released a joint statement on Saturday. They stated, “The five student fans made a very bad choice to engage in disrespectful and racist harassment towards HF students seated in the bleachers.” The statement praised staff for acting quickly to remove the students and ensure the safety of others.
The district is collaborating with Lincoln-Way East leadership and local authorities to explore protective measures. These might include legal actions to prevent future incidents.
“We are aware that a group of five Lincoln-Way East students displayed inappropriate and offensive behavior at the football game against Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday night. The students involved are not members of the football team,” the Lincoln-Way East district’s statement read.
Lincoln-Way East’s website also addressed the situation. The district expressed its serious stance on the matter. An apology was extended to the HF community for the students’ behavior, emphasizing that such actions do not reflect the school’s standards.
The schools have identified the students involved. They assured the community that discipline policies and procedures are being followed.
