Despite being an emerging figure in the Democratic Party’s 2028 discussions, Newsom faces a significant hurdle: his association with California. His home state is often viewed unfavorably across the political spectrum due to its liberal reputation.
Challenges Faced by Newsom
South Carolina voters are aware of the challenges Newsom may encounter. Vera DeVito, a 78-year-old Democrat, expressed concerns about his ability to appeal nationwide due to his California roots.
Newsom’s potential rivals, such as Michigan’s Pete Buttigieg and Pennsylvania’s Gov. Josh Shapiro, are considered more competitive contenders due to their origins in battleground states. They appeal to moderate and independent voters, essential for a successful presidential campaign.
