West Virginia University’s baseball biomechanics lab has become a significant attraction for some of Major League Baseball’s top players. Staffed primarily by students, the lab uses advanced technology to analyze and improve player performance.
Recently, Cy Young award winner Paul Skenes visited the lab. Amid the scenic mountains of West Virginia, he observed analytical data displayed on computer screens. Equipped with only casual attire, including sweatpants, the team works diligently to capture and interpret biomechanics data.
Skenes participated in detailed assessments designed to evaluate his performance. The state-of-the-art lab captures precise movements, such as the pitching motion. During one assessment, Skenes concentrated on a ground marker, amidst gleaming LED lights, to throw a baseball over 60 feet. This sophisticated process quickly furnishes valuable insights for players.
