The Atlanta Falcons have announced Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback for Week 1. This decision comes as Michael Penix Jr. recovers from a knee injury sustained in the late 2025 season.
In 2026, the Falcons have been dealing with a dynamic quarterback situation. Tagovailoa becomes the sixth quarterback to start a season opener since Matt Ryan’s final year in 2021. After Ryan’s departure to the Indianapolis Colts, the Falcons tried various quarterbacks including Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, Kirk Cousins, and most recently, Michael Penix Jr.
During the offseason, the Falcons made significant changes. Head coach Raheem Morris was replaced by Kevin Stefanski, who joined the Falcons after his stint with the Cleveland Browns. The team acquired Tagovailoa following his release from the Miami Dolphins.
“You want to prove people wrong,” Stefanski said on the team’s website. “This is an opportunity for Tua to show his resilience and capabilities.”
Despite concerns about Tagovailoa’s ability to remain healthy, he has shown promise in the past. In his Pro Bowl season of 2023, he played 16 games, helping the Dolphins achieve success with an 11-6 record.
The NFC South has been unpredictable in recent years. The Panthers narrowly won the division last year with an 8-9 record. Previously, the Buccaneers ruled from 2021-2024 and between 2017-2020, while the Saints dominated before that. The Falcons are aiming to replicate their last division title in 2016, which led them to the Super Bowl.
The Falcons will kick off their season against the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road as they seek to make a strong start under their new leadership and quarterback.
