Hundreds of anti-migrant protesters wearing masks halted traffic around the Port of Dover, England, over the weekend, creating significant disruptions. The demonstrators, dressed in black and carrying flags, blocked roads leading to the ferry port, chanting slogans such as “stop the boats” and “Christ is king.” This resulted in a highway backup stretching 4 miles, affecting ferry passengers and freight transport.
The Kent Police described the protest as spontaneous, with no arrests made. However, local Labour Party lawmaker Mike Tapp questioned this, suggesting the protest was organized and criticizing the police’s preparedness. He stated the need for rapid mobilization of officers when Dover is targeted again.
Leading the protest was Patriot Platform, a far-right group headed by Daniel Thomas, who is known as Danny Tommo online. Thomas celebrated the protest on social media and mentioned the presence of legal support for activists during the demonstration.
Dover has historically been a focal point in Britain’s debate over “small boats” and migrants crossing the English Channel. The U.K. government condemned the demonstration while affirming the importance of peaceful protest.
Right-wing politician Nigel Farage criticized the protest, particularly the use of balaclavas, calling the behavior disgusting.
Within 24 hours, a second protest occurred in Portsmouth following the interception of a boat carrying migrants. Protesters confronted police as authorities processed the migrants. Some attempted to block buses transporting them, prompting police intervention.
Anti-migrant protests have surged across Britain, including violent incidents in cities like Glasgow and Belfast. Tommy Robinson has led significant protests, often attracting large crowds.
Despite efforts by successive governments to reduce undocumented migrants arriving by small boats, significant numbers continue to make the journey, fueling ongoing protests. The latest demonstrations underline the persistent public frustration over migration issues.
