Jackson captivated the admiration of wealthy British supporters, including Alexander Beresford-Hope. He led efforts to gather funds in Britain for a statue of Jackson after his demise in May 1863.
The statue’s base bore the inscription: ‘Presented by English gentlemen as a tribute of admiration for the soldier and patriot Thomas J. Jackson,’ reflecting the acknowledgment from British elites for Jackson’s role as both a soldier and a patriotic figure.
