Christine Taylor Reflects on Role as Marcia Brady and Hollywood’s Demands

Christine Taylor, known for her portrayal of Marcia Brady in “The Brady Bunch Movie,” recently shared insights from her experience. During the “Office Ladies” podcast, she revealed a surprising demand made upon securing the role, highlighting an aspect of Hollywood in the 90s.

Taylor had become captivated by the character Marcia Brady through her participation in “The Real Live Brady Bunch,” after being a long-time fan of the show. She had watched every episode thoroughly, giving her a deep understanding of the character.

“And then out-of-the-blue one day, I mean, out of the blue on my answering machine in 1990, whatever year this was, 92 or 93, I got a message from Sherwood Schwartz calling me, just cold calling me saying, ‘I would love to meet with you…'”

Christine Taylor nostalgically recalls receiving a direct call from Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of “The Brady Bunch.” This unexpected Hollywood moment left a lasting impression on her, even though she regrets not keeping the tape.

With strong confidence in her suitability for the role, Taylor found the casting process straightforward. She recalls not having to audition solo after her initial readings with actors portraying her onscreen siblings, Jan and Cindy.

“I knew it in my core that there was nobody who could do it better than me,” Taylor remembered.

The actress openly discussed a request she faced upon taking the role: to lose 10 pounds. While acknowledging that she wasn’t overweight, she expressed embarrassment over the demand, which was common in Hollywood at the time.

She accepted this condition as part of the industry norms, noting it wouldn’t be acceptable today. Despite the fluctuating weight visible in the movie due to reshoots, she remained focused on her work.

Christine Taylor shared that once filming ended, she indulged in frozen yogurt, a popular treat from the era, celebrating the completion of scenes. Her dedication to the role never overshadowed her enjoyment of the process.

“…frozen yogurt was the big craze at the time. And that was my treat. I was like, ‘Oh, I wrapped. I’m going to meet my roommate. We’re going to go to the Big Chill and get a frozen yogurt with a huge thing of sprinkles on the side.'”
