Philanthropist David Rubenstein has acquired the modern sculpture “Blue,” which was previously located at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Rubenstein, the former chairman of the Kennedy Center, purchased the artwork for over $2 million. This acquisition comes following his ousting by President Donald Trump in 2025.
The sculpture is intended to be displayed at the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden. Rubenstein also holds the position of chairman on the board of trustees at the National Gallery. This acquisition was initially reported by the New York Times.
As workers prepared to move the sculpture from the Kennedy Center on September 2, anticipation grew regarding its new home at the National Gallery of Art. The purchase emphasizes Rubenstein’s continued investment in the arts and the enhancement of national cultural institutions.
