Officials in Colorado have reported the unfortunate death of a climber following a fall from a peak south of Aspen. The incident took place at Castle Peak, an imposing mountain in the Elk Mountains that reaches an elevation of 14,272 feet, according to Mountain Rescue Aspen.
Rescue team members, alerted by the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office, arrived at the scene by 4 p.m. Despite the swift response, the climber’s injuries were determined to be fatal.
Eyewitnesses, including Rebecca Rees, shared details of the tragic event on social media. “Unfortunately, we witnessed the event. It has been an extremely sad and terrible afternoon for all involved. He did not survive,” Rees stated. Another bystander, identified as Robert, made a brave attempt to reach the injured climber at his own risk, hoping for a chance to save him.
Despite the remote location, rescue crews successfully navigated the challenging terrain. They reached nearly 13,000 feet in under two hours during a holiday weekend. Using off-highway vehicles and helicopters, officials managed to access the area. After locating the fallen climber, a helicopter returned to Aspen for additional personnel and coordinated efforts near the peak.
In total, 21 rescue members participated, ensuring the climber was recovered from the mountain shortly after 8 p.m. Rebecca Rees expressed gratitude towards the rescue team’s compassionate approach, emphasizing the importance of the collective efforts. “The response of search and rescue, the sheriff, and the coroner all made us feel like every single person matters. This young man had a story and we all care,” she remarked.
