Chris Rock recently shared his thoughts on Hollywood’s hidden complexities and the unique allure of Los Angeles. During an interview with Variety, the comedian highlighted the city’s contrasting nature.
He described Los Angeles as a “complicated place” due to its dual nature of fame and underlying issues. Rock expressed that while fame used to be about achieving greatness in entertainment, now it’s often just about being famous. He noted that lacking talent will eventually get exposed, with L.A. being at the center of such situations.
L.A. is the mecca of that. It can be beautiful. It’s got the best weather in the world. But it also attracts an underbelly that people want to pretend doesn’t exist.
Rock, who owns homes in both New York and Los Angeles, said he enjoys certain aspects of the West Coast. He humorously mentioned that he “winters” in California, appreciating its renowned weather.
In discussing his directorial work, Rock mentioned his current indie film project, “Misty Green.” The movie explores the experiences of a once-famous actress now struggling in Los Angeles. He drew attention to the stark contrasts within the city, exemplified by extravagant real estate alongside visible homelessness.
Reflecting on a personal past incident, Rock spoke about being slapped by Will Smith at the 2022 Academy Awards. Smith had reacted to a joke Rock made about Jada Pinkett Smith. Reflecting on this, Rock said:
I wish nothing would have happened. It’s a crazy world. We walk by homeless people. There’s all sorts of stuff going on right now. Me having a bad day is not the biggest—it’s not that important.
Despite the incident, Rock is determined to return to the Oscars only if he’s nominated, managing his expectations without dwelling on the past events.
