Rep. Maggie Goodlander, a Democrat from New Hampshire, has won her primary election. She will now compete in the general election for a congressional seat located in the western half of New Hampshire. This district spans from Massachusetts to the Canadian border and leans toward the Democratic Party.
Goodlander succeeded Rep. Ann Kuster, who retired. She is married to Jacob Sullivan, former National Security Adviser under President Biden. Though Republicans have held New Hampshire’s governor’s office recently, Democrats have maintained control at the congressional level. The district has been under Democratic representation since 2013, with former Republican Rep. Charles Bass previously holding the seat.
Goodlander was challenged by State Rep. Paige Beauchemin, a fellow Democrat from Hillsborough. An independent candidate will also run in the general election. Lily Tang Williams won the four-way Republican primary and will be Goodlander’s opponent.
Goodlander’s husband, Jake Sullivan, played significant roles in foreign relations, including during the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021 and the early Russia-Ukraine conflict. He also managed the U.S. relationship with China during his tenure.
Beauchemin criticized Goodlander for not being progressive enough. The district is primarily rural, including cities like Pittsburg in northern New Hampshire. Changes are coming to the state’s political landscape, with Rep. Chris Pappas not seeking re-election as he runs for the Senate seat vacated by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.
