Ryan Rolison has long been recognized for his noteworthy talent and potential. Selected in the first round of the 2018 draft by the Colorado Rockies, Rolison arrived with high expectations. However, achieving success at the professional level eluded him until this year. Now with the Chicago Cubs, he has made significant strides in his performance.
Last season with the Rockies, Rolison struggled, posting a 7.02 ERA across 31 games. Despite these challenges, joining the Cubs provided a fresh start. Called up in mid-April, Rolison has emerged with a 2.89 ERA and a 146 ERA+ in 52 appearances thus far.
“Playing for the Chicago Cubs and becoming a key part of this bullpen is a dream come true,” Rolison shared. “A year ago, closing a game against the Brewers seemed unimaginable. I’m proud and grateful for this chance and excited to finish strong.”
Manager Craig Counsell recalls the Cubs’ coaches noticing Rolison’s potential early in spring training. They recognized the value he could bring. Counsell credits Rolison’s health as a crucial factor in his success this season.
“He had the talent but hadn’t found the answers before,” Counsell noted. “We provided guidance at the right moment, and Rolison was ready to receive it. This synergy, along with good health, unveiled his potential.”
Rolison joined the Cubs from the White Sox waivers in January. The Cubs had a clear plan for him, needing his full commitment. Reflecting on his past performance, Rolison knew changes were essential. “Results speak volumes, and my 2025 results weren’t favorable,” he admitted. Determined for improvement, he embraced the Cubs’ approach.
Rolison highlights three key elements to his success this season: the encouragement to be himself and pitch confidently, simplifying his focus to aim pitches effectively, and adjusting his pitching arsenal. Adding a sinker and sweeper to his mix has been beneficial, especially against left-handed batters.
“I’ve had challenges with right-handers, and we’re exploring strategies there. I feel confident but know there’s room for growth,”
Rolison remarked.
Throughout the season, Rolison has increased his confidence by performing well in high-pressure scenarios. His reliability provides Counsell a dependable option amid staff injuries. “Experience in these situations brings confidence,” Rolison said.
As the season concludes, the Cubs aim for a playoff spot, hoping to host games at Wrigley Field. Rolison’s ongoing success might prove pivotal:
“Postseason games bring a different energy, and that’s what you envision in your backyard games as a child,”
Rolison reflected. “The fans have been amazing, and October will be incredible.”
