A Colorado judge has increased the bond for Barry Morphew, a murder suspect arrested by Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies last week. Initially set at $3 million, the bond has now been raised to $10 million cash only.
Judge’s Decision
The judge highlighted Morphew’s potential to commit new offenses while on bond as the reason for the increase. She noted his lack of respect for the court, stating that he would not comply with conditions that inconvenience his lifestyle.
Arrest and Court Appearance
Morphew appeared in Alamosa County Court for a bond hearing on September 8, 2026. He was arrested on September 3 in unincorporated Boulder County on an Alamosa County warrant for failure to comply. Deputies arrested him around 9:11 p.m. without incident. The court issued a bench warrant and set the bond initially at $3 million cash with nationwide extradition.
During his court appearance, Morphew wore a white and orange striped outfit, and the judge decided to set his bond at $10 million cash. After the hearing, deputies escorted him out of the courtroom.
Violation of Bond Conditions
Prosecutors presented GPS monitoring data indicating Morphew left his home on August 26, violating his bond conditions. Although authorized to leave only for work, the GPS data showed he drove to Denver International Airport. Morphew’s attorneys claimed he might have gone to pick up his daughter, but prosecutors argued this trip demonstrated an “extreme flight risk.” The data also showed him visiting various locations, including a steakhouse, Whole Foods, and a liquor store, while in Denver.
Additional Violations
Prosecutors investigated further after GPS data showed Morphew near hotels and a mall, and later at East 8th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard in Denver. There, he was involved in a hit-and-run incident captured on video. The video showed Morphew offering cash instead of providing identification and later leaving the scene.
Awaiting Trial
Morphew is currently awaiting trial for first-degree murder related to the death of his wife, Suzanne Morphew. He has pleaded not guilty and denies the charges.
