Stefany Shaheen, daughter of retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, secured a significant victory in the Democratic primary for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District. Her win marks a crucial step for Democrats aiming to gain control of the House. The race attracted various Democratic candidates, including incumbent Chris Pappas, who is now pursuing a Senate seat.
Chris Pappas has represented the district since 2019 and announced his run for the Senate last year. He expressed gratitude to the people of New Hampshire for their support and pledged to continue fighting for their interests in the Senate.
“I’m honored that the people of New Hampshire have entrusted me to fight for them. I’m proud of what we have accomplished together and I’m going to continue this fight in the U.S. Senate,” Pappas stated.
Pappas last won reelection with 54.0% of the vote, defeating Republican Russell Prescott, a local legislator. The open seat in the district drew multiple Democratic contenders, including Maura Sullivan, Marine veteran and former official in the Obama administration, Carleigh Beriont, a progressive union organizer, and Christian Urrutia, an Army National Guard officer and attorney. Urrutia eventually dropped out and endorsed Shaheen, solidifying her status as a frontrunner.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen publicly endorsed her daughter, Stefany Shaheen. She commended Stefany’s dedication to the district and her achievements.
“I’m so proud that Stefany is answering the call to serve the district she was born and raised in, where she has started a business, worked on the Portsmouth City Council and advocated for affordable health care and clean water,” she expressed.
Stefany Shaheen’s campaign highlighted vital issues like Medicare for All, tax breaks for first-time homebuyers, and reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Maura Sullivan, meanwhile, cast herself as an experienced leader. Her campaign focused on tackling price gouging, supporting the VA, opposing tariffs, and boosting federal housing investments. Sullivan’s background includes military service and positions within the Obama administration.
Stefany Shaheen will now move forward to the general election on November 3.
