Democrats Demand Federal Investigation
Democratic lawmakers are requesting a federal investigation into the potential misuse of personal data collected during events celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The concern centers on whether this information could advantage former President Donald Trump and his allies in the 2026 midterm elections.
Representatives Jared Huffman of California and Joe Morelle of New York are spearheading this call for the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to scrutinize Freedom 250, an organization closely tied to Trump. Their inquiry follows a detailed examination of Freedom 250’s ties to America250, a congressionally chartered commission managing the anniversary events.
Efforts to contact Freedom 250 and several other involved parties for comments have been made.
Details of the GAO Request
House Democrats have formally asked the GAO to determine if personal data from Freedom 250 events is being leveraged by Trump’s political network. In a September 8th communication, Huffman and Morelle outlined their apprehension that such data could strategically benefit Trump’s political efforts.
The lawmakers are keen to learn where such data is stored, who has access, and whether there are protective measures preventing its exploitation for political gain.
Allegations of Data Collection and Use
The lawmakers allege that Americans registering for Freedom 250 events have been required to provide personal information like names, emails, phone numbers, and ZIP codes through systems linked to Campaign Nucleus, a platform owned by Trump’s former campaign manager, Brad Parscale. They note this operation was supported by another of Parscale’s companies, Dyspatchit, which managed communications, and Ace Specialties, which handled merchandise.
There are claims that event registrants were encouraged, perhaps unwittingly, to engage with Trump fundraising platforms like WinRed by consenting to receive alerts and donation requests.
Huffman and Morelle argue a national contact list, enriched with voter data, represents a significant political asset. They have asked the GAO to check whether adequate safeguards are in place.
Freedom 250’s privacy policy confirms it collects personal data and may share it with vendors, but insists on protections against unauthorized use.
The request to the GAO does not provide specific evidence of data being misused, focusing instead on examining control and security measures.

Freedom 250, initiated by Trump in December 2025, describes itself as a non-partisan organization dedicating its efforts to the nation’s semiquincentennial. Criticism has arisen from Democrats regarding its operations, suggesting it overshadowed the America250 commission.
America250, established by Congress, functions to coordinate national celebrations through the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and collaborates on anniversary-related initiatives.
Who is Brad Parscale?
Brad Parscale has played key roles in Trump’s campaigns, notably as the digital director in 2016 and later as campaign manager in the 2020 reelection effort. His company, Campaign Nucleus, is central to concerns about data handling due to its role in managing Freedom 250 event registrations.

The House Natural Resources Committee oversees various national interests including public lands and energy development. It also conducts investigations related to these areas. Huffman leads a prolonged scrutiny into Freedom 250’s operations, having released an interim report accusing the organization of mismanaging federal resources for the celebrations.
