The Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts recently expressed admiration for Lonnie Bunch, the head of the Smithsonian Institution, as Bunch announced his retirement. His decision follows a period of strain between the institution and President Donald Trump’s administration, mainly centered on how American history is represented at the Smithsonian.
Bunch’s decision comes after more than a year of disagreements with the White House, highlighted by a report from the Trump administration criticizing the National Museum of American History. This report argued that the Smithsonian had been influenced by a ‘radical, activist ideology’ contrary to the traditional narrative of the United States.
Bunch, defending the institution’s approach, sent an internal email acknowledging areas for enhancement. He argued that the report did not fairly reflect the museum’s work and the comprehensive story it aims to tell.
Roberts, who is the Smithsonian’s chancellor, commended Bunch, saying he pursued excellence in recounting the nation’s history. He noted that Bunch’s leadership significantly benefited the Smithsonian.
There were also allegations from Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley. They warned of potential loss of federal grants for the Smithsonian if it continued under current leadership. A letter to Congress highlighted concerns about issues like ideological capture and alleged violations of Federal antidiscrimination laws within the Smithsonian leadership.
This ongoing political tension reflects broader debates over how history should be taught and preserved in national institutions. It underscores challenges faced by leaders like Bunch in navigating political pressures while maintaining scholarly integrity.
